When it comes to choosing an energy supplier, majority of customers hesitate between large numbers of companies and tariffs (recent studies have shown that there are over 4 thousand different energy tariffs in the UK). And I don’t blame them at all, since it is a decision that will affect their home budgets, so the decision has to be made accordingly. In order to help all those people struggling to make a decision, I decided to compare two youngest companies on the energy market in the United Kingdom – Ovo Energy and First Utility.
Unlike some major UK energy companies like British Gas, Ovo Energy and First Utility are backed privately. Although these two companies stepped into the market not so long ago, there’s quite a difference between them. I cannot claim which company is better, since everyone has their own needs and requirements, but I will state the facts about both companies and leave the decision up to you.
Ovo Energy is based in Cerencester, England. It was founded in 2009 and was really welcomed by UK consumers, due to increasing competition in a market with high prices. The company began selling energy to domestics on the 2nd of September, 2009. The company utilizes latest technologies to make them more efficient and help customers save money.
Unlike other energy companies who confuse their customers with countless types of tariffs, OVO Energy decided to keep it simple and offers only two tariff plans – “Ovo New Energy Plan” and “Ovo Green Energy Plan”. The only difference between these two is that “Ovo Green Energy Plan” is 100% renewable energy, while “Ovo New Energy Plan” includes 15% green energy. Green tariff plan is definitely going to be slightly more expensive, but it still has better value than some of the other tariff plans out there.
Furthermore, this company offers a protection from sudden price spikes, by offering fixed monthly price plans for their customers. You can also opt in for direct debit program and choose to receive bills via e-mail.
First Utility is a gas and electricity provider in the United Kingdom and is based in Warwick. It was founded in 2008 and has always positioned itself as the cheapest energy supplier in the UK. It is part of First Telecom group, which provides telecommunications services since 1994.
This company can truly be named as the most innovative energy company on the market right now. First Utility is widely recognized for being the first UK energy company that started offering smart meters to all their customers, allowing them to automatically read and transmit meter readings.
FU’s most popular tariff plan is undoubtedly the iSave. In July 2012, they launched iSave Fixed v3. It is going to be a fixed tariff till December 31st 2013 and will cost consumers approximately £1,000 a year.
What I really like about these non-big energy providers is their pricing politics and that you do not have to worry about going over your monthly budget!
